Most handheld laser welders don’t die from a bad laser source. They die from small, avoidable mistakes in daily use.
In our factory, we see machines sent back for repair every year — and in almost every case, the laser source is fine. The problem is almost always something small: a damaged lens, dirty optics, or a chiller that froze.
Follow the 6 precautions below to keep your operators safe, avoid expensive downtime, and make your laser welding machine last for years.
1. Only Trained Operators Should Use the Machine — Always with Laser-Rated Safety Glasses
Laser welding must be done by trained staff. The beam is strong enough to cause permanent eye damage in a split second, and ordinary sunglasses or regular face shields do NOT protect your eyes.
- Always wear laser-rated safety goggles (EN 207 or ANSI Z136.1 rated) that match the wavelength of your machine.
- Check your goggles before every job and replace them when scratched or worn out.
- Never let untrained staff use the machine, even for a “quick test.”
2. Inspect and Replace Damaged Optical Lenses Right Away
Check the protective lens and other optical parts before every job. A chipped, burned, or dirty lens doesn’t just make welds weaker — it can bounce the beam back and damage the laser source itself.
- If anything looks wrong — stop and check it.
- Replace damaged parts right away to protect both weld quality and the machine.

3. Handle the Torch Gently and Keep Optical Parts Clean
Always handle the welding torch and optical parts with care — no dropping, no rough handling.
- Keep optical parts clean and free of dust and scratches — they slowly reduce beam quality, and beam quality is weld quality.
- Clean them with the right tools (lint-free cloth and recommended cleaning solution).
- Never touch optical surfaces with bare fingers — fingerprints burn onto the lens and ruin it.

4. Maintain the Water Cooling System: Change the Water Every 2 Months, Add Antifreeze in Winter

The chiller keeps your machine cool. Follow this schedule:
- Change the cooling water every two months using pure (distilled) water.
- Add antifreeze before winter so the machine runs normally in cold weather.
- Frozen water can crack the cooling lines and the chiller, causing expensive damage and weeks of downtime.
5. Clean Dust Off the Machine Regularly
Dust buildup stops the machine from cooling properly and makes parts run hotter — a common cause of early part failure.
- Clean the outside, vents, and radiator fins regularly.
- Pay extra attention in grinding or cutting shops where metal dust is common.
- Better cooling means parts last longer and the machine runs more smoothly.
6. Keep the Machine Away from Other Electrical Equipment
Place the laser welding machine away from other electrical equipment to avoid electrical interference.
- Never let the clamps of a traditional welder share space with the clamps of your laser welding machine.
- Weak stray currents can interfere with the machine’s electronics and cause random faults that are hard to find.
What Happens If You Ignore These Precautions?
Operators who skip these rules face a shorter laser source life, random faults, chiller damage, and avoidable safety risks. And it always seems to happen on a rush order. Following these precautions not only makes your machine last longer — it also makes sure it runs smoothly and keeps your production line working.
Laser Welding Machine Maintenance: Common Questions
Change the cooling water every 2 months using pure (distilled) water. Add antifreeze before winter so the chiller doesn’t freeze and crack.
Yes. Use laser-rated goggles (EN 207 or ANSI Z136.1). Ordinary sunglasses and face shields do not protect your eyes from a laser beam.
